An online workshop on Vermicomposting was organised by Dogra Degree College, Bari Brahmana for the students of Environmental Studies on 31st of August 2021. The speaker of the session was Dr. Sharanpreet Singh, a researcher in Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. All the faculty and students took part in this online learning opportunity. The event was organized under the support of Mrs. Bela Thakur, Principal, Dogra Degree College by Ms. Simran Devi, Lecturer in Environmental Studies.
Dogra Educational Trust has always welcomed innovative ideas to implement in its colleges, in line with the same ideology and to develop understanding for the waste management needs and also as a green initiative this workshop was organized. Vermicomposting is the best method to execute a green step in the college complex. This workshop was planned with the point of view to take students and faculty members in the world of green composting through earthworms. We are looking forward to install one such vermicompost unit in college premises with the support of the resource person, Dr. Sharanpreet Singh and also other available experts in the field.
The resource person elaborated on setting up of vermicomposting units both on small scale as well as large scale. He also acquainted the listeners about the various species of earthworms used in different regions of India. He shared in detail the parameters to be ensured for the vermicompost unit to work well. He threw light on various kinds of solid wastes from commercial as well as domestic sector which can be utilized for feeding the earthworms and obtain the black gold (vermicompost).
Today’s event was a very lively interaction although it ran on an online platform. The session began at 11 am on Google Meet. It commenced with the formal welcome address to the speaker of the day by Ms. Simran Devi, Lecturer in Environmental studies and ended with the formal vote of thanks by Mr. Himanshu Salgotra, student of BBA 2nd Sem. At the end of the presentation both teachers and students asked their questions and clarified their doubts regarding the installation of vermicomposting unit. The speaker welcomed every question and satisfied the curiosity of the listeners.
It was overall an informative and learning experience for the students and the faculty. After the session a feedback form was filled by attendees to give general comments and suggestion regarding the lecture.
